Despite thoroughly enjoying the characters of the Marvel universe, I’m unfamiliar with Ant-Man. I missed the first film starring Paul Rudd in the leading role, yet liked its sequel- Peyton Reed’s “Ant-Man and the Wasp”.
THE PLOT:
Professor Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) and his daughter Hope Van Dyne (Evangeline Lilly) are on a mission to rescue his wife Janet Van Dyne (Michelle Pfeiffer) from the quantum realm, where she’s been stuck for thirty years. Though Pym has invented the requisite technology, he needs Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) to connect with her, being the only person to have returned from this realm.
Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen) in partnership with Bill Foster (Laurence Fishburne) and wheeler dealer Sonny Burch (Walton Goggins), want access to Pym’s technology for their own selfish reasons, leading to a fast paced, action-packed, three-way race.
THE COMMENTARY:
Unlike the weighty Avengers series, this film is much lighter, seemingly even make-believe in comparison. The issues involved are on a smaller, more personal scale, which engages the audience but also lends a touch of irrelevance to the story. With multiple characters and significant sub-plots, the story has a tendency of losing its focus. Stricter editing would’ve benefited the screenplay.
The shining star is the witty humor, liberally peppered through the film. Each character is shown in a positive and negative light, constantly keeping the viewers on their toes. I especially enjoyed watching three bad-ass women, of varying ages, take the reins without being overtly sexualized.

Rudd brings the right amount of humor and authenticity to balance the scientific and serious dispositions of Douglas and Lilly. John-Kamen is fierce yet vulnerable, and Goggins personifies sleaze perfectly. Michael Pena, Rudd’s business partner, produces the most laughs. The stellar cast performs well.
The special effects are on point, especially in the tense action sequences. The gorgeous scenes of the quantum realm deserve special mention. The music is catchy and well-placed.
Despite being a first time viewer, I wasn’t lost in the story. The backdrop is explained subtly so as not to bore its regular audience.
THE VERDICT:
This film is worth watching for its entertainment value, slick action sequences and first-rate performances. Fans of the Avengers and the Marvel Universe will especially enjoy it.
