A couple of months ago, I was writing content for a food website. I no longer write for them but a couple of pieces that I had already worked on still remain unpublished. So, I’m sharing them on my blog for your benefit.

Think about the ultimate comfort food that promises both nutrition and flavour, and it’s highly likely that homemade soups of all kinds top your list. There are so many varieties and iterations of soup, and even more ways of making soup like a professional chef. However, when it comes to taking your homemade soup up a notch with the addition of a simple topping, the real MVP is one you may not have thought of – dehydrated caramelised onions.
With their gently sweet flavor and smokey brown texture, caramelized onions are a sure fire hit when added to a number of dishes. Yet, there are also a number of ways to take caramelized onions up a notch. One of these is to dehydrate them. This process allows them to be stored for longer periods of time, while also adding an extra crunchy texture to make them even tastier. The best part? Once these dehydrated caramelized onions are ready, they make for excellent soup toppings!
Why dehydrated caramelised onions make excellent soup toppings
The first thing to understand when deciding to work with dehydrated caramelised onions as soup toppings, is how the dehydration process alters the onions from their freshly caramelised state. In their original state, having just been caramelised, the onions taste sweet as the caramelisation process brings out the naturally sweet flavours of the onions. When they are dehydrated, in addition to the sweetness, one can also taste salty and savoury flavours, rounded off with a delicious kick of umami. Their texture also changes, becoming crispy and flaky in comparison to the smoothness of simple caramelised onions.
Their unique properties therefore make dehydrated caramelised onions the unsung heroes of a number of dishes, and especially soups. French onion soup, which is perhaps the first soup you think of when considering the addition of caramelised onions to soup, is a great example. The dehydrated version of the caramelised onions will add depth to this soup, as well as plenty of delicious aroma. Fortunately, you don’t need to restrict yourself to onion soup when it comes to using dehydrated caramelised onions as toppings. They go well atop a large number of vegetable soups – think cream of tomato soup, potato soup, and cauliflower soup. The singular flavours of these veggie soups really benefit from the crunchy and sweet-salty taste of the dehydrated caramelised onions.
Tips to keep in mind when using dehydrated caramelised onions as soup toppings
The first thing you may be keen to know are what kinds of onions to use in this case. Milder onions have a sweeter taste and therefore should be your first pick for caramelisation. Sweet onions, white onions and shallots are good examples; however, any onion will do. Once the caramelised onions are ready, you should dehydrate them on special dehydrator trays. You will know they are done when they are cool and crunchy to touch.
To correctly store dehydrated caramelised onions, vacuum sealed bags are your best bet. However, in a pinch, a good airtight container will also do for them to last up to a year. You can also use these crunchy toppings to make caramelised onion powder which makes a great addition to certain kinds of dishes, and even soups. Further, you can mix them up with salt to make caramelised onion salt. Apart from soups, these tasty toppings are great on anything from salads to sandwiches to eggs and mashed potatoes.

Caramalized onions is one thing I avoid in all foods. But your post makes it looks really yum to add into soups especially!
🙂
I have used onion and garlic powder often but dehydrated caramelized onions are something I haven’t tried yet. It sure will pack in a punch and some crunch to the food.
🙂
French onion soup is my favourite. Is it possible to make dehydrated onions at home?
Yes of course you can! The easiest way is to purchase a dehydrator which helps with preservation of many foods.
Dehyadrated stuff is very popular in areas where there are extreme climates. I’m sure it would also help on hikes and other trips.
🙂
Dehydrated, caramelized onions are great for enhancing the taste of many dishes including soups. As you said, the dehydrated caramelized onions can be kept for a year. Nice recommendation!
🙂
I am a soupie, but I have never looked at caramelised onions as a topping for soup. I shall give it a shot.
🙂
I didn’t know about dehydrators available for home use. I always thought they were for industrial use. Caramelised onions are yum, and the layers of flavours in dehydrated versions sound even better.
🙂
Informative!
🙂
Caramelised onions are such an essential add-ons and condiments for most meals for us with most meals. I didn’t know they could be dehydrated and then used as soup toppings too! Thanks for sharing this, Noor. Definitely trying it out.
🙂
Onion is a humble ingredient but you’ve made it the hero of your post Noor. 😊
I am not sure I have had soups topped with caramelized onions cuz I don’t like the texture but maybe I can have the dehydrated version as the texture wouldv changed.
Yes the dehydrated ones are crispy like chips!
Well Noor, I never made or tried making caramalized onion for any of the dishes I cook, but my husband did for his cooked biriyani at home toppings. All I can say it made the biriyani served on plate look cool but i dont think it added any extra taste to the yummy biriyani.
Try it in soup – it has a chance to shine above the other flavours.
That sounds like a very versatile product out of onion. I get dried onion, onion flakes and onion powder from supermarkets. However, I have never tried them and do not know whether they stand for dehydrated caramelised onion. 🙂
Not the same but dried onion would come closest.
I use a lot of things in my soup, and caramelized onion is one of them. Not only do I love the flavor, but the garnishing part looks good too. Thanks for such a detailed post . I loved the pictures too.
🙂
Never tried it ..but must try. Thanks for this informative piece

I have been cooking for half a century but have not used caramelized onions, ever. Thank you for sharing this new culinary tip, Noor. I am going to try them out.

I love to have caramelised onions topped with crisp fried garlic and spices as a side dish too. They’re so versatile and can add an amazing flavour to a regular meal.
That sounds delicious!
We use caramelized onions is quite a few preparations but dehydrated ones not as much. They are perfect for soups though. I also like them on the thukpa.
🙂
Crisp Caramelised onions or birista elevate any and every meal when sprinkled on top, according to me. Of course, soup is no exception! I however hardly used them as it takes quite some time to deep fry the onions to turn them crispy and crunchy.
🙂
Once upon a time, I used to make dehydrated caramelised onions at home. Now they are readily available. They are perfect for soups.
🙂
Dehydrated caramelise onion I heard it first time and now I am wondering how it will taste. Your post telling it is tempting I should definitely going to check it and taste it. New information added to my dictionary. Thank Noor

I’ve tried caramelized onions in biryani but never thought to use them as a soup topping. They will surely add such a rich, sweet flavor!
