If you have ever experienced a bad hair day then you have undoubtedly wondered what you can do to improve the health and behaviour of your hair. After all, good-looking hair inspires confidence, while bad-looking hair can have the opposite effect.

Of course, you probably are already aware of the benefits of good quality products like those from Kevin Murphy, especially when you need to rescue a bad hair day. Used in conjunction with a good protective spray it can work wonders. But even this tool only deals with the appearance of your hair. What about the health of your hair?

The link between diet and hair health

The Ingredients of Hair

Hair is made mainly of protein. It is actually 95% keratin which is a fibrous form of protein, which is a fibrous form of protein. Hence it stands to reason that your body needs protein in order to produce keratin. Low levels of this kind of protein in your hair make it weak, reduce its ability to retain moisture, and make it look dry, dull and flat.

In short, protein is the most essential ingredient for healthy hair.

The good news is that this problem is easily addressed – you eat protein every day. If you eat enough protein, your hair will be healthy. Protein is present in a lot of different foods, making it easy to include in your diet.

Of course, a variety of minerals and vitamins are also needed to balance the protein in your hair. In short, eating a healthy balanced diet goes a long way toward having healthy hair. While all minerals and vitamins are beneficial to your body, the hair is particularly fond of vitamins A, C, E, and the B range.

Other Causes of Unhealthy Hair

Protein is essential for hair health but the hair is also largely made of water. If this leaves the hair strands they will become dry and brittle. There are two ways in which water can leave your hair.

  1. Stripping Oil

Your scalp naturally produces an oil known as sebum. This oil travels along each strand of hair, protecting it and helping to contain the moisture. In effect, it is a protective shield that maintains the health of your hair.

Some people produce too much of this oil and have greasy hair. But in all cases, if you wash your hair with harsh chemicals you will strip the oil from your head and leave your hair unprotected. It will become dehydrated and unhealthy.

2. Exposure

The other problem that healthy hair faces, is exposure to excess heat. This literally dries the hair out. It can be a result of using heat styling tools and having the setting too high. Or, it can be due to sun exposure as this sucks the moisture out of the hair.

In both cases the hair will become dry and damaged, making it harder to maintain and keep your hair healthy.

Final Thought

Knowing that there is a direct link between the food you eat and the health of your hair, should be enough to make you look at your diet and make the necessary changes. The fact that it will improve your overall health and reduce the likelihood of age-related diseases, is simply a bonus!
