Things to Do in DELHI with KIDS: Art Workshops with Kiran Nadar Museum of Art and Mommy A-Z

Young children need constant mental stimulation, through creative, academic and physical outlets. During a long break from school, the need to find new and innovative methods of stimulation increases. Hence, the art workshop, organized by Facebook parenting group Mommy A-Z, in collaboration with the Kiran Nadar Museum of Art, was well-timed with my son’s winter vacation.

With Pia Desai Pasricha of Facebook Parenting Group Mommy A-Z

MOMMY A-Z:

This online community of parents is a genuinely supportive parenting space. One can ask any parenting-related (and sometimes general) question, to which one will receive a wide spectrum of answers, allowing one to make an informed decision. Are you wondering about schools, extra-curricular activities, dietary issues, where to travel, or reviews of a particular product? Mommy A-Z is your one stop destination. I urge you to join the community if you’re a parent (details below).

Apart from general discussion, the group organizes informative events, that also serve to connect like-minded parents. I’ve previously attended workshops on mindful parenting by Dr. Anupam Sibal, post-partum weight loss, raising emotionally balanced children, and recognizing development milestones in children (click on each topic to read more on it). “The Art Jam” was organized by Mommy A-Z, to introduce parents to this wonderful resource at the Kiran Nadar Museum of Art in Delhi.

THE KIRAN NADAR MUSEUM OF ART (KNMA):

The Kiran Nadar Museum of Art in Delhi is India’s first private, modern and contemporary art museum. It’s known for introducing the best in India’s contemporary art scene, to the general public. I’ve previously attended an exhibit by artist Vivan Sundaram, and an exhibition of works by underprivileged children organized by NGO Artreach India (click here to read more). The space is ideal for big functions, like the recent Felicitation Ceremony for The Habitats Trust Grant (click to read more).

Currently, the museum is showcasing the works of renowned Gond Tribal artist Jangarh Singh Shyam. His unique and colourful style, will appeal to children and adults alike. My son and I thoroughly enjoyed a walk through the exhibit.

As part of their efforts in spreading a love of art, the KNMA holds free art workshops every Saturday for children, and their parents/guardians. These workshops provide art material to be used for various art forms, and use an interactive method of teaching and engaging children. Workshops for adults are also organized periodically, on request (details below).

THE ART JAM- MOMMY A-Z x KNMA:

Held on a Thursday afternoon, the event had a large and enthusiastic attendance. Three tables designated to materials, were divided according to age groups. Ages 1-3 were encouraged to stick paper cut-outs and buttons on a canvas; ages 4-6 could choose between painting a canvas or a glass surface; and children above 6 could paint a pre-drawn canvas, or pots, among other craft activities. As with all things arty, rules didn’t apply, and most kids chose whatever activity their heart desired. For nearly two hours, the young children were wholeheartedly engaged in their work.

Delicious snacks were provided by ‘ZaZaMi by Sabina’, a catering service specializing in kid’s birthday parties (details below).

Rinilita, Priyanka and Somya from KNMA conducted the workshop very competently; drawing on canvases and glass surfaces to be painted on; as well as patiently answering questions.
