Diwali in Delhi: Decking Out!

There are many exciting things about the festival of Diwali. These include shopping, gambling with teen patti, enjoying yummy food and games at various Diwali Melas, and distributing gifts to your loved ones. There are also puja’s and prayers for the blessings of Goddess Lakshmi. My absolute favourite part, however, is the whole aspect of dressing up- my family, my home and myself.

Diyas, candles and fairy lights are put up across the entire home. Rangolis with colour and flowers adorn the floors (though my active toddler might get in the way this year!). My husband’s and father’s respective offices are also decorated and windows are left open overnight to bring in some prosperous winds.

Multiple new traditional clothes are bought for multiple Diwali taash parties. Jewellery and other accessories are planned in advance and the makeup is allowed to be absolutely glam! The planning process begins in the weeks leading up to Diwali as there are many occasions that allow you to bring out your traditional best.

Diwali night itself is always a family affair where we all meet for a nice dinner and a friendly game of cards. As my grandfather would say, if we don’t play cards on Diwali night, we risk being reborn a donkey!

This year, my Diwali look preparation has begun two nights before with a little pamper session. I have a face mask on and I’m writing this post in anticipation of the festivities over the next couple of days! Tomorrow morning I have a salon appointment to prep and prime for the big day. My outfits for day and night have been picked out and I have some makeup looks in mind (soft and colourful in the day, smokey and neutral at night). Follow me on Instagram here if you’d like to see them.

No matter what you love most about this beautiful festival, I hope you derive as much pleasure from it as possible. Don’t forget to say NO to crackers and YES to a healthy, green Diwali. Wishing you all a very happy and prosperous Diwali 2017!
