A brand that’s been around for almost 5 years in an over saturated food and beverage market is definitely worth its salt! Smoke House Deli originated in 2013, replacing the iconic Smokehouse Grill. The Deli stands out because of its laid back vibe, sumptuous food and friendly staff.
As a recognition of its loyal patrons, Smoke House Deli held its first ever Member’s Night on the 20th of September at its popular Khan Market location. An entire section of the first floor was set aside for around 20 people. Each invitee brought along a family member or friend.
The Smoked Chicken Goat Cheese Tart
We were showered with attention from the moment we entered. After being seated and introduced to the other members, the delicious appetizers were presented in quick succession. A special menu had been curated for the occasion by chef Neeraj. My favourites from the selection of starters were the subtly spicy ‘Zattar Spiced Basa’ fish; the ‘Smoked Chicken Goat Cheese Tart’, consisting of a perfect savoury pastry with a soft chicken filling; and the flavorful ‘Lamb Chorizo Piccante’. The vegetarian options were good too. A dish called the ‘Balsamic Toasted Vegetable Gallet’ had an interesting smokey flavor, but the ‘Truffled Broccoli and Cheddar Tart’ was bland and a tad disappointing.
The signature cocktails
The night would have been incomplete without their signature cocktails. I tried two of the sangria concoctions. I preferred the ‘Melon Sangria’ which had a white wine base and a crisp flavor. The ‘Sangria Rosso’ in red wine was too sweet for my liking.
The main course offered six options, of which I tried the non-vegetarian kind. These included the ‘Penne Pink Curried Sauce with Chicken’, the ‘SHD Peri Peri Grilled Chicken’ and the ‘Chilli Crusted Cobbler’. The vegetarian dishes were ‘Cottage Cheese Steak + Ratatouille’, ‘My Boss’ Style Spaghetti + Mushroom, and ‘Tomato + Mascarpone Risotto’. The mains were mainly popular items from the regular menu. The penne is known for its butter chicken-like taste, and truly lived up to that interesting description. The fish cobbler was unique, but my favoured dish was the peri peri chicken which was absolutely delectable. I loved the mix of sweet and spicy flavours which made for a truly distinctive taste. I’d recently had a bad experience with a peri peri grilled chicken at Caffe Tonino. Fortunately, this one was completely different and very memorable.
We were served a mix of desserts, of which the popular ‘Flourless Chocolate Fudge’ was clearly the winner. The ‘Passion Fruit Cheesecake’ was well made but did not cater to my taste buds.
Overall, I had a stellar dining experience, all thanks to the team at Smoke House Deli. They went out of their way to ensure all the member’s had an unforgettable night. I’d like to thank Meetali Kutty and Rajat Ghabru in particular.
