Tips for Building a Capsule Closet

Posted by

Fast fashion is overwhelming our senses and clogging up the planet, even as freebie-clad influencers give us major FOMO from their new and fresh #ootds. Fortunately, fashionistas in the know are countering this by embracing the concept of a capsule closet. Wondering what it is? A capsule closet entails the selection of a limited number of items of clothing which can be switched up and styled effectively to create numerous different outfits. It helps us save time in deciding what to wear as well as money on buying new trendy clothes every season. It also ensures that all our clothes fit well and look good, and helps us do our bit towards being sustainable.

โ€œA capsule closet allows you to create outfits easily,โ€ says Mansi Monga Trehan, celebrity fashion stylist, singing the praises of the concept. โ€œOne can reuse and restyle a well-rounded wardrobe and adapt it to seasonal changes. Itโ€™s great because you can utilise your outfits to the maximum simply by recreating new looks from the same clothes!โ€

Tips for building a capsule closet

If youโ€™re convinced about the merits of starting your own capsule closet, hereโ€™s everything you should keep in mind when building one yourself:

Keep it Neutral

Neutral hues must form the basis of your capsule closet, as they are easy to coordinate with any kind of outfit โ€“ casual or glam, comfortable or statement-worthy. Whites, blacks, greys and beiges are shades that can easily transition from cosy to chic and vice versa.

Donโ€™t be Afraid of Colours or Patterns

Traditional wisdom will tell you that a capsule closet should be made entirely of basics in neutral colours. However, to really elevate your capsule closet and be prepared for any kind of occasion, play it smart and include a few colours and patterns. A statement scarf, accessories in pops of colour, or a vibrant dress or skirt, will take even the most boring outfits up a notch.

Shop your own closet before venturing out

Before you run out to invest in potential items to build your capsule closet, shop your own wardrobe first. Identify the pieces you wear the most, and then ask yourselves if they perform all the functions that complete an outfit. Then, buy those items that are missing from the list of essentials. Trehan shares, โ€œCreate a wardrobe with a combination of existing outfits in your closet. Some new pieces can be bought according to current trends.โ€

Have a Basic Checklist in Mind

Getting dressed is an easy and enjoyable process when you have a small selection of clothes that you love, know how to style well, and feel confident in. Trehanโ€™s basic checklist includes a well-fitted pair of denim jeans, a classic white shirt, a trench coat, a crisp blazer and a black dress.

Donโ€™t Feel Restricted to a Particular Number

Thereโ€™s no need to feel restricted when it comes to building a capsule closet that lasts an entire season. Start with a comfortable number of clothing items and be open to eliminating or adding more as you go along. This process will help you truly gauge your sartorial preferences.

Be Serious About Your Selection Procedure

Before you begin selecting garments for your capsule closet, heed this advice shared by Trehan, โ€œAsk yourselves these simple questions: Is this item comfortable and practical, and does it suit my current lifestyle? Is it easy to wear, clean and maintain? Will it pair easily with the other items in my capsule closet? Can it be styled in different ways and dressed both up and down?โ€

Armed with this knowledge, you are well-prepared to build the capsule closet of your dreams.

    1. My closet was chock-a-block with clothes and yet I would reach out for only a few favourite ones most of the time. That was the time I started reading about creating capsule closet ( a bit tough with Indian clothes where the dupatta has to match or compliment the Suit and salwar) but I have started being more thoughtful about getting clothes now.It is some basic clothes that can be paired in multiple ways .More than saving closet space , it has reduced the time spent on thinking what to wear.

    2. This is such a clever and smart concept, I wasn’t aware of! I suppose it requires quite a lot of experiments and trials to create a capsule closet that reflects one’s perosnality. But definitely an interesting concept, worth exploring!

    3. Interesting. I’ve been having a capsule closet for ages now. I always mix and match what I have so that I don’t have to buy several outfits and can make do with what little I have. Only off late hubby has been buying me dresses over dresses. And I’m trying to exchange a few outfits with my cousin so we both can mix and match and wear different outfits.

    4. I am such a dumbo public in regards to fashion is concerned that you will not believe. After reading the first few lines of your post I googled the meaning of Capsule Closet… Can you imagine. But knowingly unknowlingly I use this concept in my life… Sayed Itna bhi Dumbo nahi Hu… Hai na ๐Ÿ™‚

    5. Very few of us can have a capsule closet, Noor. Yes, we have been talking about minimalism but our wardrobes are expansive. For a capsule closet, we have to go the Western way. 1 black dress, 4 tees and jeans is what their closet has.

    6. What a breath of fresh air! Itโ€™s wonderful to get practical guidance on choosing timeless pieces rather than trendy ones. Your packing checklist is going into my next travel prep routine. Thank you for making capsule closets both doable and fun!

    7. It is a very useful blog for me at this moment when I am planning to add some new clothes to my wardrobe though whenever I look into my wardrobe it is challenging to find something suitable to wear because I need to declutter a lot of the items it hold.

    8. This was such a helpful read Noor. Iโ€™ve been wanting to declutter my wardrobe for ages, but I get overwhelmed just thinking about where to start. I also tend to stick to neutrals because Iโ€™m honestly scared of colors and different patterns, but your tips made it feel a lot more doable. Hoping to start soon.

    9. Great tips. With age i am trying to keep some solid staples and mix and match them for different looks. I think one cannot overstate how accessories can really change up a look!

    10. I used to get overwhelmed with my closet being overfilled with outfits I hardly wear. Then I donated a major portion of it, and after so many years of existence, I can proudly flaunt my closet with every piece that I actually end up wearing.

    11. It’s time we pause and think about the planet. A capsule wardrobe is just what we all need. I think celebrities need to promote this concept rather than dressing up for big events. Whoever thought of this deserves applause.

    12. I feel that I can never curate a capsule closet, no matter how much I want to. I am incapable of downsizing and colours are such an integral part of my closet! And ethnic wear, they are a big chapter in themselves!

    13. I feel among Indians difficult to think of capsule closet. We have so many occasions and dress up accordingly. Atleast my generation. My wardrobe groans !

    14. Capsule closet sounds like a welcome change from our overstuffed closets and zillion outfit options. It’s all about good styling and accessorising.

    15. I have heard about a capsule closet. It is a great concept, but I have my doubts it would work in India, where we have tons of clothes. Some we don’t even wear anymore but we cannot discard.

    16. This is the first time Iโ€™m hearing the term โ€˜capsule closet,โ€™ but turns out Iโ€™ve been following it all along. I stick to a few favourites and donโ€™t chase trends or shop too often. For me, comfort always comes before fashion. Hope Iโ€™ve got the meaning right!

    17. I have been hugely influenced by influencers and unnecessary ads all these years. But I have been mindful these last six months making conscious efforts to build a wardrobe that I can always reuse. I never knew about the term capsule wardrobe though. ๐Ÿ™‚

    18. Yes capsule closet is a great idea – my problem is that I am always underconfident about the choices i make ๐Ÿ˜€

    19. I really appreciate these capsule closet tips! Simplifying my wardrobe helps me save time and feel more intentional every day. Itโ€™s amazing how fewer, thoughtful pieces can bring such calm and confidence to a hectic routine. Thanks for sharing!
