Sunder Nursery is a 16th century heritage park, located in the heart of Delhi. In 2007, the Aga Khan Trust collaborated with the Archaeological Survey of India, South Delhi Municipal Corporation and Central Public Works Department, to refurbish the gardens, spread over 90 acres. This world-class park opened its doors to public last year. Read on to know 9 reasons why you must visit this place:
- BEAUTIFUL HISTORICAL MONUMENTS:
Sunder Nursery is a beautiful garden, laid around 15 well-preserved Mughal era monuments. UNESCO has granted world heritage status to 6 of these. Some famous ones include the Sunderwala Burj, Sunderwala Mahal, and Lakkarwala Burj.
- GORGEOUS FOLIAGE:
This place was used by the British as a testing ground to plant foreign trees. It has been a nursery since then, and contains a plethora of splendid flowers, bushes, shrubs and trees.

- INFORMATIVE NATURE WALKS:
I attended an informative and well-conducted nature walk, led by Kavita Prakash of Sausage Tree Nature Walks. She regaled us with stories of native as well as foreign trees in the nursery. Her charming personality, and passion for nature made the 1.5 hour excursion, delightful. All details below.
- DEMARCATED PICNIC AREAS:
To preserve the pristine beauty of the Sunder Nursery grounds, only certain areas can be used for picnic-ing. You can park yourself in a beautiful spot with your family to picnic, or you can walk in the quiet of nature without being disturbed- you have the option of both. The numerous guards manning the grounds, ensure no one walks on the grass where they’re not allowed to.
- PLENTIFUL PHOTO-OPS:
The beauty of Sunder Nursery can’t be described in words. The stunning backdrops will appeal to Instagrammers, nature photo lovers, as well as pre-wedding photographers. Be prepared as pre-wedding shoots are chargeable! Details below.

- SUNDAY FARMER’S MARKET:
“The Earth Collective”, an organisation that works to promote an organic, healthy lifestyle; curates a Farmer’s Market here every Sunday. One can find pure cotton clothing, healthy super grains, organic vegetables and fruits, as well as delicious treats to eat. Arrive early for the best experience, as the market is steadily picking up in popularity. Details below.
- EXPERIENCE DELHI’S MAGNIFICENT HERITAGE:
The Nursery overlooks the Humayun’s Tomb. Its Mughal-era monuments, fountains and backdrop, take one back in time. Yet it also has a British ethos with its choice of flora and pristine layout. Walking through the well-kept grounds, one can feel the weight of centuries past, and witness Delhi’s rich history.
- CULTURAL EVENTS AT THE AMPHITHEATRE:
An amphitheatre is open for hire, for private cultural events. Any experience in such an enchanting environment, would certainly be memorable.
- ANNUAL MEMBERSHIPS:
Sunder Nursery offers an annual pass through which members get unlimited access to the nursery grounds, along with other perks.
I highly recommend a visit to Sunder Nursery. Whether you choose to go on a family excursion or for a leisurely walk in a charming garden; you will not be disappointed.
