Around India’s Food Landscape Through my Writing

Posted by

Hi everyone! After eons, I signed up for a blogging challenge hosted by team Blogchatter where the participants have been tasked with writing five blog posts or creating five content pieces on the subject of food. While I happily signed up for it, my tremendous work commitments in this time period have left me with no time to actually write new blogs or create new content. Hence, so far, I’ve shared older pieces (here, here, and here) that were never published. For the last two pieces of content, I plan to collate and share links of some of the best food articles I’ve written in the past. As a passionate writer and avid foodie, I have summarised a number of “must-eat” lists from different parts of India. Here are the links to all those articles.

Delhi:

I have to begin with my home city right? Having lived in Delhi all my life, with the exception of one year in London to study, I feel I have an in-depth knowledge of the food scene in the capital. So, here are my favourite restaurants in Delhi:

Goa:

If there’s a place that everyone loves visiting in India, it’s Goa! As I’m married to a complete water baby and mother to another one, Goa is almost like an annual destination for us. So, over the years we have identified some excellent dining options here.

Here’s my pick of the best eateries in South Goa:

Here’s my pick of eateries in North Goa:

North Indian Highway Stops:

When you’re driving from Delhi to any destination in Punjab or Himachal Pradesh, you know you’re going to stop for a meal or two. So, here’s my pick of the best eateries on these particular North Indian highways:

Landour, Mussoorie:

This quaint little hill station has become very popular over the last few years, but my family has been visiting it for much longer as my husband’s siblings went to boarding school nearby. Here’s what you absolutely shouldn’t miss if you’re planning a visit here:

Amritsar, Punjab:

As my husband’s family is from Amritsar, their ancestral home is located there. We visit often so that we can make a pilgrimage to our holy site – the Golden Temple. But the delicious food of Amritsar is also a huge attraction! Here’s my list of the best eateries here:

Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh:

I have accompanied my husband on work trips to Lucknow many times. On one of those trips, I made full use of the free time on my hands. I enlisted the help of friend, fellow blogger and local resident Manas Mukul to take me on a hidden gems foodie tour of Lucknow.

Here are the absolute best vegetarian food options in Lucknow:

Here are the absolute best non-vegetarian food options in Lucknow:

So, that’s a wrap on this post. I still have to figure out what I’m writing about tomorrow as it’s the last day, but I promise you it will be food-tastic!

  1. Ah being a foodie has so many perks. I feel like just give me tasty food and I’ll be your friend for life. Loved your curated links. Royal Cafe in Lucknow is a favourite haunt, even though I have visited the city only twice!

  2. Keep them coming, Noor! As someone who is always excited to discover different types of foods wherever I visit, this post is a treasure for me.

  3. Your post makes me wish I hadn’t given up on food! I have been to Goa twice and forgotten about the things I ate on the street, I only remember the feni and how crazy I went on my first trip to try this. It was such a delight to have local alcholic drink. Now, I would just go for coconuts and boiled rice.

  4. I am not much of a foodie Noor but I do indulge once in a while and ofcourse recommendations are very important. esp. when u r in a new place… otherwise we end up spending a lot for very bad food. I will save your post and surely check out the restaurants you have recommended if I visit the places. Btw, I opened your north Goa link but there was nothing in it except one paragraph… 🤔.

    1. Hi Kaveri, you have to scroll down after the first para and it says ‘Continue Reading’ in a bright orange box, which you have to click to access the full article…

      1. Sitting at a wellness centre ( detox) trying to heal my knee, this made my mouth drool! Bookmarked all to revisit just in case I travel to that city.

  5. This is a keepsake post, Noor. When I visit Delhi or travel by road to Amritsar, I shall surely refer to your suggestions. I have explored Lucknow’s food places, but not of Goa. Delhi is THE Mecca for food lovers and it provides a gourmet’s delight in every range.

  6. This is like the written/blog version of a show I used to follow a few years back ‘Highway on My Plate’. I’ve bookmarked this one, especially for when I visit Delhi and Goa because those are the destinations I have on my list for my India visits in the next couple of years. The others, hopefully will happen sometime too 🙂

  7. Food is the common connection between us, the Punjabis. I’ve stayed in Amritsar and am now a resident of Delhi-NCR. Your well-curated list is saved in my heart;)

  8. Its great that you have written about your favourite places. This list will definitely help us narrow down on the must-have food items when we’re travelling to that area. Being a foodie myself, its good!

  9. You know what I loved the most in your fairly exhaustive Indian food blog? That you dedicated space to vegetarian fare in Lucknow. Now that was a myth happily bust for pure veg like me who until now had been mistaking the city to be catering only to nonveg palates. And your Delhi chaat blog made my mouth water wishing I could take the first flight for the capital chaats there. Also, congrats your blogs posted on the highly prestigious First Post.

  10. Wow! Noor, that’s quite an exhaustive list. I wonder if you’ve had any chance to explore south Indian food and if yes, would love to know them too. 🙂

  11. You added Goa in the list and I love you for that as I am not just a sea lover but also a seafood lover and Goa is one of our favorite spot which we love to explore again and again. I will surely take the Goa references first and will plan a quick trip to this destination to explore the sea again and the restaurants you referred.

  12. These are indeed often visited destinations for most people in Delhi, well, atleast me, and everyone I know, and finding good places to eat is ALWAYS the subject of much googling and asking… happy to find your curated list.

  13. As someone who’s not been in India, it’s nice to read and know the different dishes to expect from different parts of India. India’s cuisine is one of a kind, in my perspective, and I’m not surprised that different places still have their distinct dishes to be proud of.

  14. What a lovely, curated list of the best food from all over the states! I will definitely try all those eateries mentioned in Delhi and Amritsar, as I am going there at Amritsar next week. Thank you for such lovely listickles

  15. This is quite a comprehensive list. Amrik Sukhdev is our pit stop too on road trips to Punjab with an occasional stop at Zhilmil. I will be back to check out the other recommendations.
