Hi folks! It’s been a hot minute since I shared my last Project Poirot episode. I’ve been reading the books, but I haven’t been documenting my progress. In case you’ve missed my previous episodes in this series, Project Poirot is a project I’ve undertaken where I’m reading all of Agatha Christie’s Hercule Poirot novels in the order they were published. What do I achieve from this exercise? The pleasure of re-reading some of my favourite novels, a look at the growth of one of my favourite characters of all time, and the chance to analyse the craft of my absolute favourite writer.
So far, I have reached mid-way through the list. It’s taken me a while to get here but I’m savouring the books, which is why I’m in no rush to get through them. When I began the project, I did an Instagram live to discuss three books at a time. Then I would share that live session along with my reviews of the books on my blog for wider reach. This time, however, I chose a different route. Instead of a live session, I recorded an Instagram reel that came in just under three minutes. I’m not sure which format is better but perhaps the shorter format will have a wider reach? I’m sharing the video below – let me know which one you prefer for the next episode – a longer Instagram Live or a shorter reel. Till then, here are my reviews of books 17, 18 and 19.

Check out the previous Project Poirot episodes here.
Project Poirot Episode 7:
Death on the Nile:
Goodreads Blurb:
The tranquillity of a lovely cruise along the Nile is shattered by the discovery that Linnet Ridgeway has been shot. She was young, stylish and beautiful, a girl who had everything – until she lost her life.
Who is also on board? Christie’s great detective Hercule Poirot is on holiday. He recalls an earlier outburst by a fellow passenger: ‘I’d like to put my dear little pistol against her head and just press the trigger.’ Despite the exotic setting, nothing is ever quite what it seems…
My Review:
Christie’s books make for comfort reading – there’s really no other way to describe the pleasure one receives from reading her works.
Once you’ve read a few, it also becomes easy to predict the endings – which was definitely the case with this one.
Despite that, the book was superbly entertaining and well laid-out. Full of criminals, lovers and loads of entertainment!

Murder in the Mews:
Goodreads Blurb:
How did a woman holding a pistol in her right hand manage to shoot herself in the left temple? What was the link between a ghost sighting and the disappearance of top-secret military plans? How did the bullet that killed Sir Gervase shatter a mirror in another part of the room? And who destroyed the “eternal triangle” of love involving renowned beauty, Valentine Chantry?
Hercule Poirot is faced with four mystifying cases: 1. Murder in the Mews 2. The Incredible Theft 3. Dead Man’s Mirror and 4. Triangle at Rhodes. Each of them is a miniature classic of characterization, incident and suspense.
My Review:
A collection of a few choice Poirot nuggets. The perfect book to curl up with when taking a break from one’s stressful life. I re-read it after a few years and thoroughly enjoyed it.
Rating: 4/5

Appointment with Death:
Goodreads Blurb:
Among the towering red cliffs of Petra, like some monstrous swollen Buddha, sat the corpse of Mrs Boynton. A tiny puncture mark on her wrist was the only sign of the fatal injection that had killed her.
With only 24 hours available to solve the mystery, Hercule Poirot recalled a chance remark he’d overheard back in Jerusalem: ‘You see, don’t you, that she’s got to be killed?’ Mrs Boynton was, indeed, the most detestable woman he’d ever met.
My Review:
This is a rare Hercule Poirot that I hadn’t read in my teens and twenties. Apart from the highly improbable and dramatic story, I also figured out the killer and a likely motive fairly easily. I did however enjoy the setting in Petra. It’s definitely not her best work, but enjoyable nonetheless.

I’ve always found Agatha Christie’s books oddly comforting even when there’s murder, her pacing and logic soothe my chaotic reader brain. These stories reminded me why Poirot remains such a legend cool, clever, and just dramatic enough. The exotic settings, messed-up family secrets, and Christie’s signature flair made this trio a binge-worthy treat. Honestly, I could read Poirot solving mysteries forever—he makes murder feel oddly classy.
I agree!
As an Avid Agatha Christie fan I would say that I love the way she paints a picture and then logically takes the reader to the conclusion, all while maintaining the suspense.I haven’t read ‘Murder in the Mews’ among these three books so I am adding it to my TBR list.
I too found the setting in Bethlehem and Petra more fascinating than the plot itself in “Appointment with Death”.
🙂
I read Death on the Nile a few days ago, and that was my 3rd Poirot read after Hickory Dickory Dock and Murder on the Orient Express.
Did you like it?
I never read her books, they seem pretty interesting. Thanks for the recommendation. I might soon get one of her works.
🙂
Crime novels filled with interesting twists and turns and entertaining seem to be a great series. And your review is also equally good.
🙂
Your rating system seems to be like, where you don’t rate 4 and above very generously despite enjoying the book. Will be picking up at least one from these. Thanks for the recommendations 🙂
Actually I love all her books but there are some that are just amazing – so I reserve the 5 stars for those.
I’m just realizing my comment was incomplete.. I meant ‘your rating seems to be like me…’ 😀
🙂
You’ve made me nostalgic to re-read tje series as well! Right now really enjoying the new PC Agatha Christie games coming out 🙂
I never play online games but this one sounds up my alley!
I watched Death on the Nile and loved it. I didn’t know Appointment With Death was based in Petra, that intrigues me more as I have been to Petra twice and it’s fabulous. For your insta videos, my suggestion would be to shift to YouTube with longer videos. Personally, I find reels restricting, though I do post often there and its just snippety stuff. I feel Agatha Christie deserves a wider range.
I agree but I have no audience on YouTube, and no patience to build one! So I’m stuck with Instagram for now…
Christie and Poirot are a delightful duo! Thank you for the crisp reviews, Noor. The covers of the books are so eyecatching!
🙂
That was such a delightful and thoughtful dive into Poirot’s evolution through three classics—your insights into pacing, setting, and character nuance genuinely captured Christie’s enduring charm. Well done!
🙂
Two out of three from this.. Death in the News, I don’t remember at all. I think I should revisit it or read as the case maybe.
🙂
Murder in the News is one of the very early Agatha Christie novels I had bought and read. i remember loving it, but your rating is making me wonder whether I should reread.
Death on the Nile I have recently watched in Hotstar, and it was intriguing and nicely made. Watching movies have become easier than reading these days.
🙂
This is motivating me to start reading her books. I so wish to read all her books but again so many books and so little time to read. Will check this for sure.
🙂
Great trio of reviews ; “Death on the Nile” remains such a comfort read, and I agree that the setting in Petra makes Appointment with Death stand out, even if the plot felt a bit melodramatic. Desert landscapes and murder mysteries are a killer combo!
🙂
I also wish to read all her books, hoping this as a sign to pick them soon
🙂
I’m an avid Agatha Christie reader but sadly haven’t read any of these. Watched the movie The Murder on the Nile though. Going to pick one of hers when I finish my current one.
🙂
I agree with you that once you read a few books by Agatha Christie, the ending is predictable. I still enjoy reading them. It is the first time I am hearing about Appointment With Death. I have not read this one.
🙂
oh, I love a good Christie novel and it was And then there were none that got me hooked on to thrillers/mystery! I’ve read Death on the Nile from this list. I will definitely check out the rest.
🙂
I haven’t read many books but watched the BBC Poirot series!! And i loved them
🙂
Agatha Christie’s mysteries have a unique charm…clever, composed, and always gripping. Haven’t read Death on the Nile yet, adding it to my reading list.
🙂
I’ve not read the poirot books but this sounds interesting..
🙂
Agatha Christie is my favorite author apart from Sherlock Holmes. I used to read her books when I was in college, but these days I’m so occupied with work that time is just passing by. This book seems interesting, and your review made me crave to read the book right away. Picking it.
🙂
