The Vast Variety of Video Challenges #AtoZChallenge

the best viral video challenges on social media

Today marks a month of national lockdown being imposed. At first, people took time to adjust to the idea of living and working from home, sharing space with their family members, catching up with the outside world through Zoom, and consuming copious amounts of television. Simultaneously, one saw numerous photo-based social media challenges emerge- including the “Sari Challenge” asking people to dress up in the Indian national dress, or the “Me at 20” challenge which saw people dig out flattering or unflattering pictures from their college days, or the “Real Mommy Challenge” where mothers shared their favourite pictures with their children. We saw it all.

A month on, people are looking for new forms of viral entertainment, and have begun making videos involving multiple people and slick editing skills. Viral video challenges are indeed the world’s latest distractions.

It began with TikTok, as much of digital content currently does, but has moved on to Instagram and other platforms, as is evident from the new “Challenge” button on Insta stories.

HERE ARE THE VIRAL VIDEO CHALLENGES CURRENTLY DOING THE ROUNDS OF SOCIAL MEDIA:

  1. DON’T RUSH/ MAKEUP BRUSH CHALLENGE:

The video begins with a person in a disheveled state, who quickly wields the magic of a makeup brush/hair brush and transforms into their most glamorous avatar. Then, they throw the brush in a particular direction, which is ‘caught’ by the next participant who also magically transforms, and the same sequence plays out with multiple people. Usually the entire challenge is performed to the song “Don’t Rush” by British duo Young T and Bugsy, but newer versions pick their own catchy number. The brush can be swapped for other items like towels, or bottles of alcohol too.

I’ve participated in this challenge with a couple of Instagram friends and you can check it out here:

  1. PASS THE POCCHA CHALLENGE:

Inspired by the makeup brush challenge, desi influencer Prajakta Koli, swapped the brush for a decidedly non-glamorous poccha or cleaning cloth. It follows the same rules, but here people show themselves cleaning (or attempting to clean unsuccessfully!) various parts of their home.

Here’s the link to the video. I enter around the 2 minute mark in case you’d like to skip ahead:

  1. PILLOW CHALLENGE:

People cover their naked bodies with the largest pillow they can find at home and secure it with a belt. Then they shoot sexy selfies or perform dance moves. This is clearly preferred by those that have wonderful bodies to display. I don’t have the guts to attempt this one but it’s popular with celebrities!

  1. FITNESS CHALLENGES:

Various forms of “workout at home” challenges have been doing the rounds of Instagram. I had posted one for #hardquarfitnesscorona at the beginning of lockdown. Of all the challenges, this one is perhaps the only useful one! Check out my video here:

Challenge accepted!! #hardquarfitnesscorona – I jogged 3k and walked another 2k on the roads of my gated colony (which is closed to outsiders), then finished an easy circuit workout at home. Have you worked out today? – Thank you for nominating me @ananyawadhwa ! I challenge @fitbytushar @vaanibisht @davidneeraj @meetalikutty @manasmukul – Follow these steps to complete the challenge: 1. Workout 2. Post a picture/video 3. Challenge 5 more people to complete the challenge within 24 hours 4. Repost the hashtag (only #hardquarfitnesscorona ) and instructions – #stopthevirus #nooranandchawla #workout #theladylawyer #stopcoronavirus #pleasestayhome #selfisolation #coronavirus #flattenthepidemic #selfquarantine #quarantine #homeworkout #workoutathome #outdoorwalk #outdoorrun

  1. YOUR FIRST MOVE IS THEIR LAST MOVE CHALLENGE:

This one is done with family members, where each person gets a turn on the dance floor. Their successor has to copy their move and add another for the next person in line.

While I enjoy making videos, none of my family members feel the same way, so this one isn’t going to happen!

  1. VIDEO MONTAGES:

People promoting social causes have caught on to the attraction of these challenges, and are creating video montages with workers of the organisation, or persons supporting a cause. It involves multiple people singing the same song, something like this:

On similar lines, my son’s school asked us to make a video of us lip-syncing to “Heal the World” to celebrate Earth Day. Of course, I’ve participated, but that video won’t be shared on social media.

  1. BIRTHDAY VIDEOS:

Since no one is celebrating birthdays, family members are resorting to making funny or sweet birthday videos by collecting messages from their near and dear ones. I’ve filmed for a couple of these too.

All this video shooting business has kept me extremely busy in the last week, but at least it’s been fun 🙂

Have you participated in any of these viral video challenges? If not, I challenge you to try one of your choice and tag me anywhere on social media.

Here’s my tip to beat the lockdown blues today:

Make a small video diary of your thoughts during lockdown on your phone. It’s great if you’ve been journaling through this period, but a visual representation will have a special meaning when you watch it years later. You don’t have to share it anywhere- just keep it for yourself.

Unfortunately, I haven’t seen any TV shows with the letter V, so I have a movie recommendation for you instead:

“Vicky Donor” on Amazon Prime Video is the story of a young boy in Delhi, trying to make a quick buck by donating his sperm to an infertility clinic. He earns a lot of money as he’s very fertile, but his personal life suffers as a result. This was Ayushmann Khurrana’s first big performance and is quite the laugh riot.

A book you should read is:

“Veronika Decides to Die” by Paulo Coelho, which is a stark commentary on suicide among dissatisfied youth.

That’s all for today folks! I’m so excited for the weekend and I hope you are too.

Please check out my daily update videos on Instagram Stories for #LockdownWithTheLadyLawyer and follow me there to stay better connected. Also tell me your favourite TV Shows/ movies/ books/ bloggers with the letter V?

Vale till tomorrow! (farewell in Latin)

  1. The A2Z has been taken up most of my time so I don’t have time to check social media. These challenges do sound exciting though I hadn’t heard of them till now. 🙂

  2. Yes, lately I have also noticed this increasing number of video challenges. Watched a couple on Insta. It seems fun. Will be waiting for yours.

I also love to read Vartika’s brilliant write ups.

  5. Haha seems lockdown is keeping all busy in video challenges, but I live in other world as I never participated in video challenges.
Vartika and vidya both are great bloggers, I love their blogs.
And have read veronica decides to die yet another super book from Paulo Coelho.
And ofcourse vicky donor too was a great movie I can watch any day. Ayushman rocks in it.

    1. Haha. It’s for people who want to build their following on social media. But perhaps you consider people in that category, akin to having too much time on their hands 🤷‍♀️

  6. Totally clueless about the video challenges though I am aware of the ones on Fb/Twitter. Must check these out for my dose of entertainment. Vicky Donor is one of the most sensible movies made on a sensitive topic.

  7. I had no idea about any of these 7 challenges. Yes, the world is looking for new entertainment tools to keep them going. The ‘video diary’ seems to be a great idea. Will definitely like to go for it.:)

  8. Dalgona coffee wala bhul gaye…hahaha…too many challenges…Just hoping that people dont come out scarred than before. Aur han AtoZ challenge 😀 😀

Keep Going. You are doing amazing.

  9. I participated in a pass the bottle challenge last week with my blogger friends in Kolkata. It indeed is super fun. And my god Noor you are a super girl, with so much going on at home and on the blog, you find time to do so many viedos. Kudos to you!

  10. I know about the pillow challenge…Yay!!! That’s the only one I know of. Of course I participated in the sari challenge as I was tagged by a very dear friend. But didn’t go on to tag anyone. And now A to Z is making up for all the challenges combined.
I would love to tag you if I take up a challenge next.
Thanks for letting us know about all of these.
I’ve watched the movie and read Veronica too. And I do read both bloggers. So I’m good for today, right??

  11. I don’t really give into these challenges, but this lockdown season I did start working out and i will admit that the motivation was these challenges. Amazing post Noor.

  15. Wow, Noor – thank you for letting me about the different challenges..I heard about the Sari challenge and Me at 20 challenge, though…

  16. A few of the challenges,I have seen trending on Instagram and there are soooo good. But seriously, I don’t have the guts to make them. I will be waiting to see your videos.

  18. Ok I feel like I’ve been living under the rock because I haven’t seen any of these video challenges. your workout post makes me feel guilty of being such a couch potato these days. Waiting to see your makeup challenge

  19. These challenges sound really fun. I have a lot on my plate right now so I will not be able to make these videos. However, shall look forward to see your videos. 🙂

  20. Wow, the Bangalore Chorus is an uplifting one. Sach mein yaar, in this lockdown videos are great time pass ways. I binge watch something or like to search old tv series or movies these days on YouTube. Loved the post Noor.

  21. That was a very entertaining post Noor. The videos were great and I enjoyed watching them. I will definitely watch Vicky Donor. I finished watching both seasons of Dark and I liked the ending when Martha Nielson appears from what is probably a parallel universe and takes Jonas with her. We will find out what it is all about in season 3. But the 3rd season will not get released for some time because of the coronavirus pandemic. BTW the actress who plays Martha Nielson in Dark, Lisa Vicari has also played the female lead in a romantic comedy called issi & ossi. I watched that too on Netflix. Watch it sometime. It is predictable but good. I enjoyed it thoroughly.

    1. Thanks for the recommendation Jai! The third season was slated for release in July this year- let’s hope they had already finished shooting! I’m dying to know what happens next 😊

  22. Veere di wedding is a great choice too for movies,
And Vampire diaries is also good choice. I am a big fan of Damon Salvatore. I think I am too much into fairy tales, magic n vampires.

  23. I havent done any of these though watched and enjoyed some of them..Video diary is a good idea..I want to do the last step challenge …Vicky Donor is a great reco…I loved Veer Zara for its music

  24. Yes with lock down, there are so many video challenges are going on social media..I had watched few and some were new to me..watching these videos are so much fun but with A2Z, I am not getting any extra time to get involved in these, looking forward for more videos from your side. i m sure they will be awesome.

  25. Thanks a lot for the shout out, Noor. Means much. Keep doing the wonderful job.

  26. This was fun Noor..everyone is becoming so adept at acting 🙂 I have seen many viral posts like this in the extended family too but havent participated in any…thanks for sharing your videos 🙂

  27. Have seen most of these video challenges… fun and crazy things!
My niece wanted the entire family to dance and lip sync on Muskurayega India song, but were such spoil sports, we all refused. Finally she did it with her friends. 😀
Vicky Donor is a nice movie. Havent read Veronika Decides to Die. Will check it out!

  28. These challenges are truly fun Noor, they give us a reason to smile in otherwise monotonous routines. I am so glad you chose to write on them

  29. I loved this post of yours after the types of romances that you mentioned in one of your blogs. Video challenges are fun, I did not participate in any though but had watched a few of them. Vicky donor another great recommendation.

  30. I guess I haven’t been paying attention to video challenges. Everything you’ve mentioned is new to me. Guess I will go look for some after this and see if anything interests me. Thanks, Noor.

    Suggestions:

Book: Valentine Pontifex by Robert Silverberg is only one book in his amazing Majipoor series. Lord Valentine’s Castle took home the Locus Award for Best Fantasy Novel 1981. A cross between fantasy & scifi. I’m a fan of the author’s. I have enjoyed all of the books of his that I’ve read.

Movie: Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea became a TV show, all in the early to mid 60’s. An updated Captain Nemo’s Nautilus from 20.000 Leagues from Under the Sea was enjoyable. Another V, totally different, is Viva Las Vegas. If you like cheesy Elvis Presley, here he is in spades. I watched it for Ann Margaret.

TV Show: I still love Veronica Mars staring Kristen Bell. Mystery, comedy, teenage angst. Did I mention Kristen Bell?
One very short lived show was VR.5. I wish someone would pick it up NOW, update what needs to be updated, and go for it. It had a lot of promise.
